Historical Roots to Sunday School:
In 1769 Hannah Ball, saved under the preaching of John Wesley, started a Sunday School for the children of High Wycombe in Great Britain. The success of Sunday School began to take hold so much in Europe that soon God led Robert Raikes to step forward and form a nation-wide base for Sunday School teaching. The work in Europe produced massive amounts of material and soon had an influence on churches in the United States.
In 1857 a Southern Baptist Sunday School Union was formed to bring Southern Baptist churches into a cooperative fellowship and introduce the Sunday School movement to the people in the United States. The American Civil War was devastating to the Sunday School movement both in the Southern Baptist Convention and the rest of the United States. For financial reasons the first Sunday School union was closed down.
However even during the American Civil War, Southern Baptist churches used Sunday School programs in their churches. The American Baptist Publication Society of Philadelphia continued to publish Sunday School lessons that were distributed to the churches both North and South. In the 1880 talk once again begin about creating an official Sunday School Board for Southern Baptists.
With much debate and internal discussion, 11 years later in 1891, the Sunday School Board was founded and headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee. Despite the obvious tension that this board's creation caused in the Southern Baptist ranks, the benefit to the churches was quickly discovered. The unified teaching materials for Southern Baptist churches and program material created a solid foundation for church growth.
Today, Sunday School remains a vital part of Southern Baptist life. The Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention has not gone away in all these years, although it has taken a new face and expanded purpose. In 1991 the Sunday School Board became Lifeway Christian Resources and continues to operate helping Southern Baptist and other churches around the globe, assisting in many areas beyond the simple Sunday School vision that was the past.
